Grammar fixes for free wherever you already write, with sentence rewriting behind a US$9.95 Pro plan
Fast-read signals for fit, pricing, and trust.
The free plan is the interesting part: genuine spelling, grammar and punctuation checking on every surface Outwrite supports rather than one, with a thesaurus, a custom dictionary and readability figures, and nothing metered. US$9.95 a month adds goal-based sentence rewriting, style and structural suggestions, passive-voice fixes and 50 plagiarism checks a month. The caveat is older than the product feels: a privacy policy dated 2018 that keeps text snippets after a deletion request.
Outwrite grew out of GradeProof and has kept that product's shape: a checker that attaches to where you write. Install the Docs add-on, the Word add-in or a browser extension, and suggestions appear under a Corrections tab as you type, with a Thesaurus tab and writing statistics alongside. On the free plan that covers advanced grammar corrections, synonyms in context, a custom dictionary and readability figures.
Pro changes what the tool does to a sentence rather than only what it flags. The Rewrite tab takes a highlighted sentence and a goal and returns alternatives; style and structural suggestions target wordiness, weak words and passive voice; and plagiarism checking is included with a cap of 50 checks a month. Billing is monthly, switchable to yearly in account settings, and a cancelled subscription runs to the end of the paid period.
Quick fit check against how you actually work.
What you can actually do with this tool.
The same spelling, grammar and punctuation checking runs as a Google Docs add-on, a Word add-in, Chrome and Edge extensions and a web editor, so there is no separate app to paste into and the free plan is not limited to one surface.
Highlight a sentence, pick a goal such as shorter, longer, more formal, more informal or restructured, and choose from the rewrites offered. This is the feature that separates Pro from the free checker.
Passive phrases are underlined and offered in active voice, and structural suggestions aim at shorter, clearer sentences rather than only correctness.
Readability score, grade level, word and sentence counts and reading time update as you write, and the vendor lists writing statistics among the free features.
Checking works in all three languages and the browser extension switches automatically to the language you are proofreading in.

Common questions about this tool, answered.
Test the one capability the vendor specifies precisely. Take five sentences you would normally rewrite by hand — the ones that are correct but clumsy — highlight each, pick a goal such as shorter, more formal or restructured, and see how many of the alternatives you would actually keep. That is what the subscription is for. Everything Free already covers is the safety net underneath it: spelling, grammar and punctuation corrections, the thesaurus, a custom dictionary and writing statistics, on every platform Outwrite supports. If the rewrites do not land, the style, structural and plagiarism additions are unlikely to change the answer on their own.
Outwrite's privacy policy, last updated in December 2018, states that user data can be deleted on request but that its systems continue to retain text snippets as an essential part of how the AI operates, that those snippets are not routinely viewed by any human, and that data is processed in the USA by third-party processors under a GDPR data-processing agreement with TLS encryption in transit. It does not say whether your content is used to train models or how long snippets are kept.
Yes. Outwrite checks spelling, grammar and style in English, French and Spanish, and the browser extension detects the language automatically. In the vendor's June 2026 material the sentence-rewriting goals for French and Spanish were marked coming soon; nothing read since says whether they arrived, so confirm it with the vendor if you need rewriting in either.
Context for choosing between this tool and alternatives.
The free half of this product is documented precisely and the paid half is not. Rewrite is the exception: one sentence you select, one goal you pick, alternatives returned. Everything else Pro adds is named rather than defined anywhere the vendor publishes, which means the feature list cannot settle whether the subscription is worth US$9.95 a month — and anyone expecting a whole draft reorganised rather than sentences improved is reading something into it that was never claimed.
