What is this tool?

A good fit for professionals writing in a second language who want emails and documents corrected and smoothed rather than rewritten from scratch. The free version may be used for work and takes up to 1,500 characters at a time without an account, but DeepL may use what you paste to train its models and forbids confidential or personal data in it. Write Pro, a paid add-on to a DeepL Pro plan, has no per-text character limit and, while you are signed in, deletes texts after processing.

Write is the editing side of DeepL: the translator moves text between languages, while Write improves text in the language it is already in. You paste a draft, read the improved version beside it, and decide word by word or sentence by sentence what to keep. DeepL's help centre lists eleven language options for Write, from British and American English and German to Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Treat its suggestions as proposals. Commenters on 2024 videos about Write flagged changes that need checking: one reported a German thesis "delayed by Covid" rewritten as one "delayed by cancer", another said it swaps words for near-synonyms with clearly different meanings, and a third pointed to the same capitalisation corrected in one place and left in another. DeepL's terms for the free version accept no liability for the accuracy of its improvements.

Write Pro is bought on top of DeepL Pro: the pricing page sells it per user as an add-on to the Individual or Team plans, DeepL's terms cap add-on licences at your number of Translator Pro seats, and it can be trialled only while the DeepL Pro plan itself is in its 30-day trial. DeepL's Write Pro terms store Pro texts only as long as processing needs, then delete them and do not use them to improve DeepL's services; in exceptional debugging cases DeepL may keep encrypted content for up to 72 hours, and personal data needs a data processing agreement. The same terms give 10 million characters a month as the normal-use reference within a Business licence.

Is this right for you?

Quick fit check against how you actually work.

Choose this if
  • You write in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese as a second language and want to see every change before accepting it
  • You already translate with DeepL and want a polishing pass from the same company, in the same apps
  • Your team needs one style guide applied to everyone's suggestions automatically
  • You want the assistant inside Word, Gmail and Google Docs rather than in a separate tab
Consider alternatives if
  • You hoped to accept suggestions without reading them: users have seen Write change a sentence's meaning or swap in a near-synonym that means something else
  • You handle confidential or personal text and do not plan to pay; the free version forbids it and may use your text for training
  • You need Write Pro for Chinese, Japanese or Korean: DeepL's Write Pro terms do not list them, though its Write Pro overview does, so confirm with DeepL first
  • You work inside a CAT tool, where DeepL says Write is not supported

Key features

What you can actually do with this tool.

Corrections, with or without rewording

Write fixes spelling, grammar and punctuation and proposes a smoother version. Switch to corrections only to keep your own phrasing, and turn on show changes to see exactly what was altered.

Alternatives on demand

Click any word for alternatives or any sentence to rephrase it, so you choose between options instead of accepting a single rewrite.

Styles and tones

Apply a writing style such as Business, Academic or Casual, or a tone such as Friendly, Enthusiastic, Diplomatic or Confident, to steer the suggestions. DeepL's API documentation supports styles and tones in German, English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese only; it does not say whether the editor has the same limit.

Team style rules

Style rules, marked Pro in the Write editor, apply a shared style guide automatically to every suggestion, in place of style documents scattered across a team.

In the tools you already write in

Write runs on the web, in DeepL's desktop and mobile apps, in its Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions, and in DeepL for Microsoft Word; through DeepL for Chrome it also works inside Gmail, Google Docs and Google Slides. Developers can call it through the DeepL API for Write, which needs a DeepL API Pro subscription; the free API plan does not include it.

Frequently asked

Common questions about this tool, answered.

Is DeepL Write free?

Yes, there is a free version, and DeepL's terms allow both private and business use of it at no charge. Without an account you can work on up to 1,500 characters at a time, and DeepL Pro translator subscribers without Write Pro get 2,000. DeepL may reduce or restrict the free service at any time. The paid Write Pro has no per-text character limit, handles texts more strictly, and the editor marks style rules as a Pro feature.

How much does Write Pro cost?

Write Pro is sold as an extra on a DeepL Pro plan. With the region set to Germany and annual billing selected, DeepL's pricing page shows the add-on for Individual and Team plans at €6.99 per user a month, VAT included. The same page lists Write Pro within the Business plan, but DeepL's help centre says paid Write is not included in a DeepL Pro plan, so check with DeepL before relying on it. You can try Write Pro only while your DeepL Pro plan is in its 30-day trial.

Which languages does DeepL Write support?

DeepL's help centre lists Chinese, English (UK and US), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. DeepL's Write Pro terms list only English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese for Write Pro, while its Write Pro overview also names Chinese, Japanese and Korean, so confirm with DeepL before buying Write Pro for those three. DeepL's API documentation supports styles and tones in the European languages only; the editor's limits are not stated.

Does DeepL use what I write to train its AI?

In the free version it may: DeepL can process your text, its improved version and your corrections for a limited period to train its models, so confidential and personal data are not allowed. With Write Pro, as long as you are signed in, texts are deleted after processing and not used to improve DeepL's services.

How is DeepL Write different from DeepL Translator?

They are separate products. The translator converts text and documents from one language to another; Write corrects and rephrases text within one language. DeepL's browser extensions offer both while you browse.
